Are you surviving or thriving on your plantbased diet? There really is a difference!

If you’ve tried out a plantbased diet in the past and didn’t love the way it made you feel, we urge you to try it out again while implementing the guidelines below. Going plantbased can and should be easy and enjoyable – and we’re going to show you how.

At The Pizza Plant, we have some knowledge up our sleeves when it comes to the vegan diet. And most of it stems from our love for crafting fully plantbased pizza! Both of our signature pizzas are scratch-made, fully vegan, and made with Organic ingredients. We believe that in order to thrive on a plantbased diet, you not only need to consume healthy and wholesome foods, but need to consume foods that are tasty and satisfying! Get the best of both worlds with our plantbased pizzas, by grabbing a couple at your local grocery store or shopping for them online.

Enough talking about it – let’s get to it! If you’re currently a plantbased eater or are interested in starting a plantbased diet, here are 5 essential rules that’ll help you thrive:

  1. Start slow…

Once you’re set on starting a plantbased diet, whether it be for health, ethical, or environmental reasons, it can be pretty tempting to hit the ground running! And while we encourage jumping into the plantbased diet by trying out some new recipes or heading to a vegan restaurant, we also recommend taking it slow. If you’ve been consuming animal products your whole life, it can be intimidating to completely cut them out of your diet. Furthermore, suddenly consuming more vegetables inevitably means consuming more fiber, which can cause gastrointestinal distress. Our sage advice? Start by incorporating one fully plantbased meal into your diet a day, and slowly cut out animal-derived foods over time. This will help you physically and mentally, and have you thriving on your fully plantbased diet in no time!

  1. Go for wholesome over processed.

In our current day and age, plantbased diets are more popular and celebrated than ever before. That also means that there are tons of vegan food alternatives on the market – and more and more brands pop up every day! While we love that the plantbased diet is becoming more widely accessible due to these vegan alternatives, we encourage you to limit your intake of processed foods and stick to mostly wholesome, natural ingredients. Simply put, if a food label includes ingredients that you can’t pronounce, consider it a ‘once in a while’ type of food, and not the kind that will have you thriving long term.

  1. Make sure you’re eating enough!

If you’re anything like us, you rarely have to worry about ‘eating enough,’ because food is just too tasty to miss out on! However, once you begin consuming a fully plantbased diet, you will want to be aware of how much you’re eating. Plants, like vegetables and fruits, naturally contain less calories than many animal-derived foods like meat or cheeses. Although it’s incredible for your health and well-being to consume more plants, it’s important to make sure you’re eating enough of them! Undereating can cause fatigue, a weakened immune system, hair loss, and other unwanted medical issues. So if you’re looking to thrive on your diet, make sure you’re giving yourself enough calories to do so!

  1. Check up on your B12 Vitamin levels.

Against popular belief, studies have shown that plantbased diets do generally provide you with all of the vitamins and minerals you need from food. However, there have been some studies suggesting that long-term plantbased eaters should be taking a B12 Vitamin daily. Chronic B12 deficiency can lead to anemia or nervous system damage – but don’t worry! Simply taking a vitamin can help you avoid these potential health risks. As always, we recommend talking to your doctor about B12 deficiency and taking their advice on how you should proceed. When starting any new diet, it’s a great idea to have your vitamin levels tested to see if you are deficient in any essentials.

  1. Get crafty in the kitchen!

Our number one tip for thriving on a plantbased diet? Have fun with it! Going plantbased can be extremely enjoyable for a number of reasons: It feels good to consume more plants and to lessen your environmental impact, and it’s always fun to try out new recipes. Head to Google to find some new plantbased recipes, follow plantbased Instagram accounts and read blogs (like this one!) for inspiration. As long-term vegans ourselves, we can certainly contest to the fact that eating plantbased doesn’t have to be hard or boring.
